The current reason I don't restrict it to your current train's caboose, is so that you don't have to have a caboose coupled to your train while shunting etc to gain the benefit. They are like little area of effect bombs, symbolizing "there is crew in there, that might help out if there is activity nearby".
If you have a caboose track, it deducts from a nearby one. I could put a crew selector on it, so it finds it nearby it would prefer that crew's caboose.

I would love that idea too. Maybe have it default to the crew assigned to it, then if it doesn’t see a crew, revert to the other methods already integrated into the mod.
I insist that it would be a great and realistic addition, and if there’s that much protest, one could always have a toggle for it 🤷🏻♂️
I’d love to see a feature of the mod that deducts crew hours based on which train crew/engine that the caboose is attached to. This way you would eliminate the hassle of moving all other hacks out of the way so that the hours were only deducted from your train. I believe this would also solve an issue with the crew hours not being counted, despite the caboose being near the train, even if it’s out of the predetermined radius from the consist.
