this adds pebble abilities among other things #20

This includes a lot of changes that would best be discussed examined more thoroughly in individual PRs. (There has been some email discussion about this, I'm interested in helping Jason re-org some of the more useful bits.)

This is just placeholder to acknowledge the email discussions, closing this for now.
