The text tool has extensive changes in 3.0 and the guide needs to be updated.

@vortexau-jk I am attaching a quick video that shows the operation of the text tool. Please let me know in detail why you think the previous tool was easier/better. Thanks for your input.

Hi Robert,

Well, that 1:09 m video leaves me no wiser- nothing occurred, and it was just a static image with no Tool movement discernible. There was also an isolated window labelled “CSRF verification failed (403) - Discus” which displayed the following message: “There was an error submitting the form. If you’re having difficulty, try repeating the action on https://discus https://discus/.com“

As I related, I often input TEXT, normally just Upper Case, within the confines of WORD Balloons of various shapes and sizes. The rounded corners, and/or bulging outlines between corners frequently require that an opening, and a closing line of REXT be indented and finished well clear of corner confines. With the earlier TEXT Tool, I could TAB, or multi-space at the beginning of a line, and hit RETURN at a chosen point at the point that I’m ready to have Text form on the next line down.

With the present Text Tool, these operations are no longer possible. Extra Spaces (entered via SPACE Bar) do not register- Leaving me to CLOSE after EACH line, and begin TEXT Entry anew . . . often on each successive Text Line as the lines are spaced downwards — finishing once again with the FINAL line of TEXT which is short (just like the initial line) due to Left & Right lower WORD Balloon corners cutting into the area.

Certainly, it is possible to only use WORD Balloons which have sharp corners (and not rounded corners) but these sharp cornered WORD Balloons can be ugly, and are- in my use, confined to sharp-cornered COLOURED Word Balloons . . [not the usual White with Black Borders type] . . and theses are usually only used when the ‘busy’, or dark-coloured image background, calls for a type of WORD Balloon where the Border can yet be discerned over the dark background image.

So, as I related- with the PRESENT Text Tool I am usually forced to create EACH line of Text separately, and DRAG each dotted line text box into position sequentially . . . trying to estimate matching line spacing visually, which is a time-consuming chore.

I shall attach a Screen Grab from the top of a recent piece of simple artwork, which contains both a WORD Balloon, and THOUGHT Balloon- suitably redacted so not to offend sensitive viewers. I ‘cut’ it to just the upper three, and two lines, (finishing on final line and half) as any more would require almost complete redaction. If the three lines on left seem perfectly spaced; that is due to my painstaking care with the DRAGGING into place of line THREE to match the line One to Two gap. I didn’t show the WHOLE left WORD bAlloon but it is quite evident to me that with the LAST line spacing (LEFT side) I did NOT fully match the earlier line spacing.

There is sometimes a hour of work involved as I can have to perform serial UNDOs when my TEXT, or replacement words sourced from an online Thesaurus, does not quite fit the WORD Balloon confines- requiring me to increase the VERTICAL dimensions of the WORD Balloon in question.

If I then have to replace EACH line of Text separately into the enlarged WORD Balloon . . . this can become a TWO hour operation. Where just 12 days ago, I could just get the previous complete block of TEXT and Paste THAT inside the WORD Balloon border - a 15 second operation.

John,

You can still use spaces, and enter new-lines. You must use option-enter to enter a new line. Make sure you have selected 'left aligned' paragraph if you are going to do this. I have attached a screenshot to this comment.

I will look into adding a option to Seashore to have an arbitrary text box - maybe matching the selection - so then the text would automatically format to fit the ballon. image

I am not sure why you could not view the video attached here. I uploaded it to YouTube and you can access it at this link.

Please let me know if the above solves your issue.

Hi Robert,

Sorry for my delay in responding. I’ve just viewed your video from YouTube - yes, that’s more like it. I was unaware of this “option-enter” for a Word-Wrap with controlled indent. Your follow-up email with mention of a mainly free-form“arbitrary text box” feature is even more welcome.

My “usage” of TEXT does predate the micro-computer with my attendance at a typewriter class back in the 1970s. We had manual Carriage Return with any required application of the Space Bar. Typewriter use goes back over 150 years now.

I’ve attached a comic panel from a webpage story that I produced about 20 years ago (I used to maintain a WebPage back then). What is missing here is the Under-Panel text (in the British Comic Paper style) which could contrast with Word-Balloon text for (often) comic effect. The panel is quite small because Web-Pages that I assembled in that era were ’sized’ to assemble 4 - or - 6 panels to a 800 x 600 CRT screen. This was a combination of imported, and modified, graphics assembled into shape on the Personal Paint (from Cloanto) application. Here, I was using an Ecllpse Tool for Word Balloons - presently I am somewhat lazier, with a Directory containing Word & Thought Balloons which I PASTE & Manipulate into the desired shape.

The other image is of a web pic imported into Personal Paint (maybe 22 years ago) in a test of 24bit colour (which was confirmed PP could access through the Retargeted Graphics extension for the use of third-party GFX Boards - which was new since the Amiga platform had used its own hardware graphics since 1985, with up to 12Bit simulated colours (4096 colors via HAM mode) - [followed by HAM8’s 262,144 color mode in 1992].

Good on You Robert, for your attention to making, and improving SEASHORE. I remain very pleased for your continued improvement to this graphic app of yours.
