Dear Robert,

Excellent explanation. I do have a question that I cannot seems to find out through searching Google. For a user, the online archive is enabled and a default retention policy is set. However, if I check the policy on a folder level, each folder has use parent folder policy selected. However, when I check the root folder (am using OWA), it says no default policy is selected, with no option to choose a default archive retention tag. What am I doing wrong?

The behavior you described is expected. As mentioned in How do I set my archiving settings?:

Not all archiving policies can be set by non-administrators. Only the ones marked as Personal can be used. An exception to it is the root folder. No personal policies can be assigned to it.
