Crime rate: Crimes per 1,000 resident people as per the latest official Census over a selected time period.

Bear in mind that in areas with relatively low populations, a small number of crimes can generate a large per capita rate.

Also "outcomes at location" gives a good impression of how safe a place feels. http://data.police.uk/api/outcomes-at-location?date=2014-12&lat=53.4795&lng=-2.24003

Perhaps show a random crime in area?
