I have been getting quite a lot of spam when using this plugin lately. I know there are ways to implement external captcha functions, but they are rather cumbersome and rely on loading external resources I wish to avoid. Would it be possible to add a simple honeypot to the form? It might not catch all bots, but might at least catch some. A simple "What is 7 + 5" field would also help.
