AMAZING FANTASY #15 Marvel CGC VF-: 7.5 crm/ow pgs Kirby cvr; Ditko art; origin & 1st app. Spider-Man; 1st Uncle Ben & Aunt May (8/62) Second City Collection This is the Silver Age equivalent of Action Comics 1: an historic, game-changing key issue that acts as a pivot point from what came before, and what came after. The creation of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, this radical new concept featured a passive, neurotic, everyman hero; an unusually emotionally charged origin story touching on issues of mortality and family tragedy; a worldview grounded solidly in a real, recognizable universe obviously our own; and open-ended storytelling that demanded and rewarded close reading and regular readership. This milestone comic has also proven to be the success story of comics investment, growing rapidly and unstoppably in value and becoming one of the few completely bulletproof investments in recent times. This 7.5 example is in beautiful condition with a clean cover. The colors are quite impressive and the edges are nearly perfect. While Amazing Fantasy #15 doesn't look to be going out of style anytime soon, high-grade copies are always at a premium when they come to market.

ACTION COMICS-1938 #1 DC CGC VF+: 8.5 white pgs 1st Superman by Siegel and Shuster Second City Collection The most important comic book in the history of comic books. This is the introduction of the archetype of all other heroes to come. Superman transcends comic books and pop culture. He is an icon of Truth, Justice and The American Way! Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman is quite possibly the most recognizable fictional character in the world. The creation of two struggling sci-fi fans from the Rust Belt, the Man of Steel became an instant icon to depression-era readers, and easily transformed into an icon of American spirit and spunk during the brutal days of WWII. Since then, he has lasted as both a beloved character and a symbol of modern hope and vigor, making this first appearance not just a piece of comics' history, but of American history as well. The discovery of this Action 1, in 1986, simply rocked the comic book world. Pittsburg Pennsylvania. A lucky buyer wins a lot of old hardcover books at a local auction. The next day he opens up one of the hardcover books to find a copy of Action 1 hidden between it's pages. Exactly how it got there, forever lost to the ages (but probably a very interesting story).
Cut to a NYC comic book convention 2 weeks later. A non-descript Pittsburg man walk into the show looking for opinions about his monumental discovery and possibly offers. What followed was a 48 hour feeding frenzy unmatched in the annals of comic book fandom. Safe to say, if murder were legal at that time, certain comic dealers would have not walked out of that show alive. Due to the simple fact that a number of the individuals who played a role in this episode are still very much alive, we will not expound on the gritty details. But those same gritty details, including a near fist fight, was the start of a story that ends with the Action 1 offered here. The very same Action 1.

DETECTIVE COMICS #33 DC CGC NM-: 9.2 Atlantic City copy; ow/white pgs; 1 of 1! Bob Kane classic cvr/art; 1st origin of Batman, gun holster on utility belt (11/39) Second City Collection Highest Graded Surprisingly, Detective 27 contains no origin for Batman. In Detective Comics 33, the story of how Batman came to be is told for the very first time and includes the murder of his parents. This origin has become part of American culture which was later reprinted in Batman 1. Also of note is the unusual and infamous cover image, in which the Dark Knight is seen armed and dangerous, breaking the code against guns that was to become a cornerstone of the character's makeup over the years. A startling and classic image, from the beloved first year of the hero's adventures, rich with gothic shadows and crude, almost nightmarish graphics. Rarely are such antiquated books so well-kept. This copy is in remarkable unrestored condition. Coming in at a 9.2, it's exceptionally well-maintained for any comic, let alone for a Golden Age key. The bright saturated colors contrast against the black swooping figure of Batman as he descends onto two terrified gangsters to dispense swift justice. This is an essential piece of comic book history fit for the most illustrious of collections.

CAPTAIN AMERICA COMICS #1 Timely CGC VF-: 7.5 off white pgs Kirby & Simon cvr/art; origin & 1st app. Captain America, Bucky, & Red Skull; classic Hitler cover! (3/41) Second City Collection We've said it before, but it bears repeating that the popularity of characters such as Captain America and the willingness of comic writers and artists to confront the Axis threat went a long way toward mobilizing a heretofore isolationist American populace in the long, dark days of the late 30s and early 40s. While many other art forms desperately avoided or ignored the ugly truth of Europe's rapid slide into fascism and Nazism in an obvious attempt to protect their own financial interests overseas, the almost entirely US-based comics business, staffed and developed largely by fugitives from those same wartime horrors, boldly waved the flag of freedom, most notably in this instant classic. Readers immediately fell in love with this gutsy, gleefully aggressive new hero, who wore his allegiance on his sleeve (well, his forehead, at any rate) and made his intent powerfully clear by taking aim directly at the mustachioed puss of the Fuhrer himself. In these pre-Pearl Harbor days, such an image was simply incendiary, and copies flew off shelves almost immediately, leading to a nearly 75 year run as the preeminent symbol of American heroism.
The premieres of the Captain America and Avengers movies have catapulted Captain America's popularity into the stratosphere. His star is on the rise. The demand for Captain America Comics 1 has grown exponentially over the last two years. Records are constantly being set and broken. With two more Cap and Avengers movies scheduled the demand will grow and grow. We've seen quite a few copies of this book, many in condition that testified to just how cherished this issue was, but this is something quite rare indeed, a beautiful, unrestored VF- copy that is simply breathtaking. Not the rarest of keys, but one that almost never surfaces in such fine shape, a surefire bidding war will ignite over this beauty.

DETECTIVE COMICS #27 DC CGC VF+: 8.5 off white pgs; Mod(P) ct, pcs added, tr sls, clnd, reinf 1st app Batman by Bob Kane; one of the top three most important comics ever published! Second City Collection After DC Comics' huge success with Superman, editors were looking for another superhero to cash in on, and young creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger came up with The Batman. The team was inspired by Douglas Fairbanks' portrayal of Zorro, Lee Falk's comic strip The Phantom, Leonardo DaVinci's ornithopter (glider) blueprints which had large bat-like wings, the classic mystery film The Bat Whispers, and the mystery novel The Circular Staircase. As a result, in May of 1939, DC hit pay-dirt again with one of the most memorable and iconic fictional characters in history, Batman! Witnessing the murder of his parents as a child leads millionaire Bruce Wayne to train himself to physical and intellectual perfection and don a bat-themed costume in order to fight crime. Detective Comics 27 is one of the most desirable and valuable comic books to own, an important part of American pop culture history. As one of the two pillars with which comic book collecting was built, any iteration of an original copy is a sound investment and will fetch a high price at auction. This 8.5 restored copy is breathtaking, with moderate restoration, and bright colors which accentuate the dynamism of the iconic Bob Kane art.

AVENGERS #1 Marvel CGC NM+: 9.6 ow/white pgs Kirby cvr/art; origin and 1st app. of the Avengers; Fantastic Four app. (9/63) Second City Collection Highest Graded The Avengers movie and its sequels sit firmly in the ranks of the highest-grossing movies of all time. The enduring popularity of the films and subsequent interest in back-issue investment comics, has catapulted auction prices of the original Silver Age series and affiliated titles. With no plans to end the Avengers film franchise anytime soon, our educated guess is that the books will continue to gain in value as demand remains strong for this popular key. Avengers #1 debuted in September 1963, piggybacking on the success of DC's Justice League and Marvel's original super team, The Fantastic Four. With art by Jack Kirby and story by Stan Lee, this classic Silver Age issue has garnered a tremendous amount of respect and value recently. Readers were delighted to read the story of how the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Ant-Man, and Wasp joined forces to become Earth's Mightiest Heroes. As far as Marvel keys are concerned, Avengers #1 is still an undervalued comic. This Second City Collection copy is just about as good as it gets, beautifully centered, tight, and clean, minimal wear-and-tear, an absolutely striking example of a NM+ comic. The colors are as bright as on the day they were printed, anyone looking for a copy of this SA key could not do much better than this.
