clicking refresh too soon leads to redundant stat accumulation #15

clicking the refresh button while the stats are still updating leads to
improper accounting of the total statistics (categories may get multiplied
by the number of time the refresh is clicked).

this is partially fixed. to properly fix it, i need a way to "terminate" 
threads in
flight. is there a way to do that?
