Argument conversion #1

Hi Janne,

I finally got around to implementing the argument conversion and have checked in my changes (after struggling with github a bit). Can you please review and let me know if you'd like me to make any changes.

P.S. Sorry I could not remove the .gitignore file, can't understand how to limit commit range.
