Its definitely possible on mac and there are software like Plash

Will take a look once I become free / Windows version of Lively reaches maturity.

Thanks for the update! Plash is brilliant but its not quite a full engine so finally having a mac wallpaper engine that works well would be a godsend! Fingers crossed this comes through.
