Update basic network config doc with newer options #2425

Open Grammaresque opened 1 month ago

Grammaresque commented 1 month ago

This issue references the existing document, "Network Configuration."

This document explains setting up a basic NetworkManager configuration with Rocky Linux, using IPv4. According to SiteGround.com, "the primary difference between IPv4 and IPv6 is that IPv4 uses a 32-bit address while IPv6 employs a 128-bit address." This allows one to use a wider range of IP addresses in setting up the network.

We invite a community member to update or add instructions in the existing document for using this new functionality.

As part of this update, please add the tag "IPv6" to the meta information.

Before contributing to this repository please reference the Contribution Guide.

You can find us in the Documentation channel of our Mattermost chat server. We look forward to meeting you there!

I'm happy to review any contributions on this for accuracy.

In my experience, there's rarely a compelling need for static private IPv6 addresses. The current document already adequately explains how to set up autoconfiguration using nmtui, which is the recommended approach for most scenarios.

The only way to contribute I could think of is adding a section on configuring a public IPv6 address on a new network interface. What do you think?

Grammaresque commented 4 weeks ago

I think that's all we are looking for, is to somehow acknowledge IPv6 in the existing document. I don't get the impression that there is any functional change necessary with what is already there. What you describe sounds good to me.

While you are at it, maybe you could add nmtui as a keyword tag in the meta information as well.

Please and thank you.

@j0eybrinkman did you want me to assign this to you or will you pass on adopting it?

I will pass on adopting this issue for now. Thank you!
