Cleanup #44

I reviewed all of the changes made in this branch, and it looks good to me.

@ericagol Almost there. Occasionally the tests fail because we're testing (different) random numbers each time, and sometimes the error is slightly larger than the tolerance. I think it's good practice to set a randomizer seed so we're always testing the same code every time. I'll merge this once the new tests complete.
