so the camera entity created in HA keeps looping back to old images, back and forth between like 5m ago and the most recent imeg

Hmm this is probably due to the detections running a bit slow. Whats your hardware?

I5 3470/16GB RAM. no GPU

Now that i re-read your original post, 5 minutes seem very odd...

Anything strange appearing in the logs?
