Additional known fonts for Myanmar #14

Built in fonts are not very useful for native Myanmar. Common Myanmar fonts are added to the list.

  1. Why are Myanmar3 and Masterpiece Uni Sans ranked ahead of Yunghkio and Tharlon? The glyph coverage is better on the lower-ranked fonts. Are M3 and MUS better for Burmese language, whereas Y and T are better for Pa-O, Mon, etc?
  2. The link is bad for Yunghkio 1.2.2, do you have a better source? I was only able to download version 1.1.1

Thank you. I did not notice the order, that’s my fault.

My proposed order should be

  1. Tharlon (support all Myanmar languages and working on Windows, Linux and Mac)
  2. Yunghkio (support all Myanmar languages and working on Windows and Linux)
  3. Myanmar3 (support only Myanmar, former government funded project, working on Windows and Linux)
  4. Masterpiece Uni Sans (support only Myanmar and working only on Mac)

I reported to Yunghkio’s developer, he will setup the proper repository and update the website. Yunghkio is well known font in Myanmar, especially for Shan languages. Currently you can download Yunghkio 1.2.2 from the following URL. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3535692/yunghkio1.2.2.ttf

Done, thanks! BTW, Yunghkio (and Myanmar3) do work on Mac using the new "Native Mac" version of Emacs. A sample of Yunghkio on Mac is attached. I see many improvements over Sangam+Padauk, though there seems to be a rendering error (highlighted region) which does not occur on Windows. yunghkio_osx

Very fast, I was thinking to amend and push in the morning. Thank you, your package is very useful for me. :) So far (as I tested since OSX 10.8), Mac only supports OpenType for Western and Arabic scripts. AAT table is needed to work properly on Mac. Myanmar3 and Yunghkio do not include AAT. Without AAT, the characters are readable but some rendering are not correct. You are right, rendering is wrong in highlighted area and all of the dotted circle.

unicode-fonts-known-font-characteristics should probably include AAT/OTF/Graphite so that fonts could be chosen on that basis in the future. Though (as far as I know) Emacs Lisp doesn't report a difference between the TTF and OTF versions of the same font, even when the backend renders OTF.
