That's because the game has MAJOR bugs.
I tried to play too, but singleplayer said "Ping timeout".

If you are in fact in Single Player (that is, not LAN or online multiplayer).
Then the connection that is failing is to the game itself.
The frontend launches the main game, and talks to it over IPC.
Some firewalls block this. We used to have problems years ago w/ Comodo for
example.

So, unc0rr who knows all the ins and outs of the error messages says that:
16:33 <@unC0Rr> singleplayer said "Ping timeout"
16:33 <@unC0Rr> impossible
16:33 <@unC0Rr> IPC never says ping timeout
and...
16:36 <@unC0Rr> crappy connection
16:36 <@unC0Rr> ping timeout is what server says to you
16:36 <@unC0Rr> frontend/engine never say such thing
So. There you go.
BTW, Hedgewars is extremely forgiving, connection wise. Requires very little
bandwidth and can also handle fairly high latencies.
