SOme suggestions:

Remove ^nad $ from individual regexes but add automatically by setting if decided.
prestep of optional removing of all spaces and special characters except letters and digits

New argument alnum to as.codedata (and used by codify by argument dispatch) to remove all non alfa-numeric characters from codes.
