tidyverse update #5

I was trying to make this way faster, by removing some of the for loops

and then I broke it, pretty majorly, so I rolled some of that back. Long term I do want to go back and try to get rid of some of the for loops, since it is slowing it down, but for now I'm going to focus on the new features, and then do that later.
