NOAA@NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of the Sea Ice Index in GeoTIFF format. GeoTIFF files representing sea-ice concentration and sea-ice extent are now available for both hemispheres at daily and monthly resolutions. The GeoTIFF data are single-band, georeferenced images with an embedded color table to make visualizations of the dataset in GIS programs as easy as possible.
To learn more about these data and to access the archive, please visit the Sea Ice Index web page: http://nsidc.org/data/g02135.
not sure if current seaice() function uses the same data, just in diff. format, or if above is a new source of data too
