Write the community page #4

It's a placeholder now. But emphasize the following points:

a) This is a community effort. We welcome suggestions, contributions (as collaborators, pull requests). b) People can either bring their package to us, or pitch an idea and develop it with our help c) Host events for us. Some notes on that.

karthik commented 10 years ago

I believe this page is now open for comments, @cboettig @sckott What more should we add?

cboettig commented 10 years ago

Very nice. Concise and yet hits all the key things.

Perhaps it would be nice if a reader could find out more about some of our past events from links on this page, offering a more concrete feel of ways to get involved. It would in any event be nice to have a summary of all those workshops, R meetups, the hackathon, and so on that we've done to engage people so far.

Would it be out of place to plug our mailing list, twitter account or G+ page etc here as a way to get engaged? Or maybe those things should be listed on the contact page? On one hand, that feels tacky and adds clutter, but on the other hand, not every user will be aware of these things from the footer icons alone. Just something I never quite know how to deal with. At very least, it seems like a reader who wants to be sure not to miss major news from us should be pointed to the key source to follow (which is probably the blog via the mailchimp email feed?).

sckott commented 10 years ago

I wonder if @cboettig thought about listing events belongs on the events page http://karthik.github.io/roweb/events.html not filled out yet. And just link from this Community page to that page?

karthik commented 10 years ago

I'm adding a note about twitter, Google+ (do any of us maintain or post to it? I never use it).

I like @sckott's plan to just link to it. That page isn't done yet (maybe start a new issue on that).

sckott commented 10 years ago

Maybe a control-btn fui-arrow-down below the 1st paragraph pointing people down further...maybe

karthik commented 10 years ago

Now community page needs all the co-devs at the bottom. We can deep link to that section from a footer.

karthik commented 10 years ago

Bottom of community page now has this:

image

If anyone has time to fill in our co-devs, let's do it. Pictures crop well if you put then in a 250 x 250px image with the person centered. If this is too much trouble I can do it since I have photoshop. We should also re-arrange people and move the more active ones up. Also need to add the hackathon participants who contributed to packages.

karthik commented 10 years ago

Oh and PS: Those pictures need to go here:

/assets/common-files/img/community

Not mixed in with people (i.e. us)

karthik commented 10 years ago

Ok, @cboettig @sckott I'm done with the community page text. Please feel free to change or edit as you see fit.

The only thing remaining here are the thumbnails and bios from the old co-devs page.

karthik commented 10 years ago

@sckott Will you close this when done?

sckott commented 10 years ago

almost done, yeah

karthik commented 10 years ago

@sckott Since you are working on the community page, will you add Alyssa to the list? She just emailed me. I'm committing her image to the repo shortly. Here is her blurb:

Alyssa is a biostatistics PhD student at Johns Hopkins University working on computational biology problems involving lots of RNA-seq data. She contributes to the testdat package.

sckott commented 10 years ago

yeah, added alyssa, okay, pushing soon

karthik commented 10 years ago

All done except for Hilary. Will add her as soon as she responds. Removing her temporarily.
