Summary: The CMIP (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project) is a research project of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) that provides climate projections and essential data infrastructure for understanding past, present, and future climate changes, and is vital to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and other international and national climate assessments. Geonames match: Harwell Glacier | Geonames ID: 6634609
Project office of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). WCRP itself does not exist in ROR. Whether it should is somewhat up for debate, as it a joint research program administered by the World Meteorological Organization, the International Science Council, and UNESCO. That being said, it is long standing and has a fairly formal management structure (see here). CMIP is a project of the WCRP that is producing the datasets included in the request, but the organizational status here appears even less durable. If we were to add anything, I'd say we should the WCRP, but I'd appreciate hearing others thoughts/ a second review.
I am noting that there is a distinction between CMIP, WCRP and the CMIP International Project Office
. These should not be confused!
Although I agree that WCRP should be included as a separate entity, we require an identifier for any materials that we publish, which are not necessarily part of those of WCRP.
Technically we are also currently hosted by the European Space Agency by contract, but again function with autonomy and are a separate entity in its own right.
Information about the complex relationship between all the gouverning bodies can be found here: https://wcrp-cmip.org/cmip-governance/project-office/

Also to note, that the above statement and geolocation by @ror-curator-bot is completely wrong.
@wolfiex Thanks for flagging. This is an automated triage bot that attempts to provide details about the organization and identify the Geonames ID based on the location in the request, but everything is manually reviewed and assigned by the curation team.
Could you provide additional details about how the CMIP International Project Office is constituted as an organization? Does it have any legal or other structural status, such as being a nonprofit or LLC? Likewise, could you elaborate on how the CMIP International Project Office operates independently from the WCRP, per your comment about research outputs "not necessarily part of those of WCRP"?
Just an FYI, the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) is an umbrella org that encompasses a number of projects. WCRP doesn't itself fund activities, rather it's a World Meteorological Organization Programme (WMO, jointly established in 1980 with the International Science Council [ISC, previously ICSU], with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission [IOC] jumping on board in 1993). History of WCRP can be viewed here. Some of the sponsors and contributors can be viewed here. The overview structure can be viewed here.
WCRP has a number of "Core Projects" (see here), with many of these also having an International Program Office (IPO). As examples, see CliC, CLIVAR (which also has a US project office here), GEWEX, and SPARC, with ESMO and RifS currently working through the process of standing up their own IPO.
The CMIP-IPO is unique, as the CMIP project is a resident underneath ESMO, and a project working group the Working Group on Coupled Modelling (WGCM). Due to the prominence and impact of the project, it's earnt it's own IPO, sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA) and housed in Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, UK.
There are also "Lighthouse activities" (see here) which are a little less structured, in most instances.
These all aim to build on a collaborative climate research agenda, which, in the case of CMIP has grown over decades to include contributions from 26 countries, 50 institutions, many of which have been contributing since the 1990s.
Per ROR curation team discussion on 2023/11/08, WCRP Project offices can be added to the registry. Will separately create request/record for WCRP itself and identify as parent.
Assigned ROR ID https://ror.org/000fg4e24 in release v1.37.
