This is similar to #161 and #134 and https://answers.ros.org/question/271895/is-there-a-plan-to-clean-up-tags-on-ros-answers-site/, but because nothing has been resolved since then the manual option ought to be considered: someone with raw database access needs to go in and manually rename and delete tags, and repeat this every year or two.
Some examples:
There was a case of spam posts created with a 900 number, the hundreds of posts were deleted, but all the tags remain forever- these all ought to be deleted: https://answers.ros.org/tags/?t=tag&query=90013&search=
Maybe this is another spam case: https://answers.ros.org/questions/scope:all/sort:activity-desc/tags:%D8%B5%D9%8A%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%A9/page:1/
The number prefix tags ought to be renamed to the same tag minus prefix https://answers.ros.org/tags/?t=tag&query=1.&search=
Also anything with standalone version numbers like 1.1
and similar isn't very useful (but 20.04 is distinct enough to be fine)
Also anything with a prefix #
, anything with a +
is probably low value but much less important than the above.
Starting with https://answers.ros.org/tags/?sort=used&page=1 and proceeding through the most used tags ought to reveal more candidates (though again the usage numbers aren't current, the numbers included deleted posts and tags that were later retagged).
Probably many of the really low frequency tags https://answers.ros.org/tags/?sort=used&page=277 aren't useful either and are bogging down the system, but that seems like too much work to manually make a decision on each and rename or delete.
Lowercasing everything would be nice, renaming all -
to _
would further consolidate the tags.
Indeed. I will try to come up with something on the weekend. Tags matching specific patterns should be mass deleted.
I've deleted a bunch of spam tags, including most if not all with arabic script, now in process of renaming - to _, this will take a couple of days.
what do you think about the tags being upper/lower case?
Thanks!

I like all lower case and doing just that seems simpler, but there could be a few exceptions like SLAM or C++.
I manually retagged for example 1.gazebo
to gazebo
until there are none left, but I still see 1.gazebo
show up in the tag autocomplete- does that get refreshed eventually?
It needs to be deleted on the backend or a job set up to periodically delete unused tags

Is there any mechanism to clean up the tag list? From my perspective, the list is polluted by rarely-needed tags e.g. many beginning with numeric digits. When a user tries to create a commonly-used tag, these rare tags are the choices shown to users in the popdown selection list. There are so many of them that the "correct" tag is not even displayed.
Examples of common tags that are not offered in popdown selection list: rviz xacro kinetic turtlebot
