I know we don't guarantee ABI compatibility between updates to pkgs, but could this have caused an ABI breakage? There are nr of reports / questions on ROS Answers about SEGFAULTs and failing binaries starting to happen after the last Kinetic sync (4 days ago).

One poster suggested the changes in this PR could be (one of) the cause(s).
