First step in #34

Also cleans up the README. Can split that off into separate PR if so desired.

@eacousineau Thanks for the pull request! Unfortunately I think the earliest we'll be able to review this is after the Crystal release in December. How soon would you like to see this PR in?

You're welcome! And no rush on my part, December sounds good. Would be nice to start hiding the internals so they can either be simplified or stripped away at some point in lieu of something simpler.
