Empty grey area instead of 3D grid with rviz2 on WSL & Docker #834

I'm running ROS 2 foxy on WSL Ubuntu 20.04 with the precompiled packages. When I run rviz2 I get an empty grey area where the 3D grid should be. If I publish e.g. pointcloud data nothing is displayed. I have tried using export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=0 and also launching rviz2 through an Xrdp session, with no success. Edit: export LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=true does work without acceleration. RViz version Alpha compiled against Qt 5.12.8, OGRE version 1.12.1 (Rhagorthua). Windows 11 Pro 21H2 22000.493, WSL kernel 5.10.60.1, Intel Iris Xe graphics 30.0.100.9864.

Rviz2 does work fine on my dedicated Linux laptop, and I notice also in the original demo video of WSLg here: https://blogs.windows.com/windows-insider/2021/04/21/announcing-windows-10-insider-preview-build-21364/. In addition, Rviz1 works fine on WSL Ubuntu 18.04 on the same computer. image

Seeing the same issue in docker Ubuntu 20.04, except on a Linux host. Launching rviz2 around 10+ times does make the grid finally render though, I have not found any significant data in logs, straces, etc to provide any clues.

Hi all, I experienced the same situation with a similar configuration: WSL2 (ubuntu22) + Docker + ROS2 Humble + RVIZ2. I was using the ros:humble-ros-core image and I managed to fix the problem by switching to the ros:humble-ros-base . I tried to get back to the core image and manually add to the docker file the additional dependencies that the base tag supposedly uses, however, the problem came back, and didn't manage to fix it even when adding many other dependencies into the docker file.

Hello, I believe I hit a similar issue. I have tracked it down as far as I can tell to a Ubuntu Mesa regression with Orge and WSL rendering. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/2004649

Although this is a recent regression not sure if it affects the original report but affects ROS2 Humble release for sure atm.

To get around this I added to my docker image that is based off of ubuntu:22.04 the following to update the mesa libs
