Add Google Analytics tracking to site #23

The new template seems to be missing it.

I was kind of hoping we wouldn't be doing this anymore, especially in the middle of a worldwide outrage about tracking and privacy invasion. I personally surf the web with Ghostery enabled, and I always correlate in my mind the amount of blocking that Ghostery does, with the respective site's tastelessness.

I wish we could keep ROSEdu's web properties tastefully clean.

I may be biased, but Google isn't invading anybody's privacy with Analytics. It's a personal opinion, but I am not part of the privacy paranoia group. We live in a world where everybody is posting on 10 social networks what they had for lunch. Being counted as visiting a site. is not privacy invasion. Ironically, I am writing this as I am watching the Terminator series... but Google is not Skynet :P

+1 on what AJ said, I think 1 analytics service is ok. Till now we could parse log files to see traffic but if we host it on github we don't have that option anymore.

tudalex commented 10 years ago

Could we use a self hosted Piwik analytics?

Piwik sounds like a good idea, provided ROSEdu has complete control over the analytics server.

I prefer to have services running on 3rd party because they can do a better job than we can.

Since right now we're using the same solution on every ROSEdu website, let's go as Alex said with GA. On the next ROSEdu General Meeting we'll have this topic in agenda and we'll see if the members consider that having GA is bad for us.

My personal opinion is that having GA on our websites is not a problem since as Alex said, they do a great job. Also in an ideal world with ideal resources, we would setup everything on our own and everything will run great, but the history (remember when we had Redmine and once per week was down?) tells us that if we can rely on 3rd party we should do this. Also I just looked in the sources of linux.org and they also use GA.

@alexef : can you add the GA CDL-old-code to the CDL-ETTI website? or give access to @cmarius02 for all ROSEdu GA-codes . Thanks! :)

alexef commented 10 years ago

I gave him access. The tracking id is: UA-7579199-1

@tiriplicamihai , @cmarius02 : did you add GA for the cdl websites? It seems like it's only used on the old websites.
