I think I'll need some guidance on this. At the moment I'm just fiddling with them to get some output that lasts some generations and enables us to see some changes.

That's probably the best way to start. During development, I typically default to a fairly low carrying capacity (to avoid simulations taking too long) and high population growth rate (to avoid extinction). After everything is built and the code has been tested, then I think it would make sense to talk about what parameter values should be simulated and reported (would be good to also hear Mario's opinion on this).
