Rewrite the README introduction for improved readability.
Slight modifications of other README sections.

Thanks for the additional edits! I made a couple more minor edits to one line and added one more bullet point - see commit d5e77c6 above. (Sorry, I realized after I pushed this commit that it was probably not best practice to push this new commit directly into the docs_lee branch, but thankfully the edits are minor.) If this looks good to you, then feel free to merge in!
