hi @drewloomer thx very much for this PR.

A similar branch has been in waiting for some time, just opened a PR for that one as well

Not totally clear on the differences between these two but I imagine this PR must also be dependent on the same change being merged into nunjucks. If so let's wait until that change has been merged and then see how to combine these prs.
