If we have some sensor that gives us the depth a "hold depth" function could be implemented.
One assignable button that when enabled, your control over depth is disabled and Monterey will monitor the depth and throttle the thrusters accordingly to keep it within the same depth as when the function was enabled. Disabling the hold function would give back depth control to your game pad/joystick/keyboard.
