showing psfrag elements in pdf viewer #1465

I find that eps diagrams using \psfrag items do not show the items in the 
viewer using F6 to compile and F7 to view. Where the elements should show there 
are small open circles or squares.

Using dvi -> ps followed by ps -> pdf and then F7 shows the elements correctly. 
Unfortunately the forward/backward search is now muddled since the 
synchronization seems to be destroyed by the two-stage process.
