Didn't realize this. Very helpful to know.
I use the following workaround for this to get both images and CSS in the email:
Add self-contained: no
to the output options of the RMarkdown file
Include the CSS in your file using something like this:
```{r css, echo=FALSE, results = 'asis'}
cat('<style>')
cat(read_file('style.css'))
cat('</style>')
Pass inline = TRUE
to mailR::send.mail when sending the email
