gfa paths #103

This syncs #64 with the development branch. It's a trivial merge except for a few manual adjustments due to git merge failures.

Ping @rrwick do you think it makes sense to merge this to support GFA paths?

@ekg The PR seems to contain lots of unrelated changes. It may help to get rid of them in order to have much cleaner diff.

@ekg I rebased #64, this one is obsolete now.
