Thanks for working on this, and sorry it took me so long to get to this. (Life, you know.)

I've reverted this whole system out of rmfuse. It was trying (and failing) to fix a problem on MacOS, and it only produced additional problems on some systems. That revert is a superset of this change, so I'll close this.
