I like the idea of finding the "average" or most used ship during the 1700-1800 time period.
We can base our alpha build ship off of that model and just make the numbers work out so they don't totally misrepresent the ship.
From there I'd like to have a mix of ships.. Smaller ships for more maneuverability, larger ships for more firepower. Similar to how you can play different ships in FTL id like the player to begin the experience by choosing which ship to try this run with.
To begin I had some some very basic research using wikipedia here:

This space is dedicated to the development of warship themes. We will work towards refining a time period, scale, and functionality/role of various ship classes. While this topic may or may not be influenced by historical research, it will be predominantly directed by our desire to develop working and enjoyable gameplay.
This space will not work exclusively on the technical details of combat mechanics; rather, we are collaborating to develop the identity of the ship(s) that will be the involved in the game.
i.e., do we want larger Galleons or smaller Caravels? Will the primary role of the vessel be to develop speed and maneuverability, or to engage in sustained combat with an enemy? These may not be mutually exclusive attributes; and likely the task of both the developers, and ultimately the players, will be to find balance in these areas.
