Do you have gnuplot? Does it work? What plot2d command did you give? What is plot_options?

Same problem here! I am using wxMaxima, but same thing with xMaxima. It seems like Maxima is doing his job (high CPU usage), but gnuplot does not appears. The command is: plot2d([y=x^2], [x,-5,5], [y,-5,5], [plot_format, gnuplot])$ (just an example... same problem with other expressions).

plot2d function does nothing at all. It worked perfectly in v. 5.9.0.
