previous association breaks off when some words are changed in destination text #96

Hi Rubio, I've been ignoring this thing for quite some time now, thinking that its just normal. But I wish that I could save more time from this. This is somewhat related to #61

It seems that when I tried changing a word inside the destination box previously associated with the source, ibiblia tries to re associate everything or sometimes, partially. This happens randomly, not all the time. Like for example, I change the word "For" into "The" in John 3:16 destination verse, all successive words' association will be erased, so I have to reassociated them. Sometimes, not all of the words are disassociated. When I do this at the very end of the verse like if I changed the last word "life" only that word will be reset.

Probably it has something to do with the "auto-associate" feature as always turned on when editing previously associated words? If yes, is there a way to turn it off during edits?

Hi Edmund,

This issue isn't related to the auto-associate option. Instead, it arises because every time you edit the destination text, iBiblia loses its associations. This is because they are saved based on word positions - for example, the 1st word in the source might be associated with the 4th and 5th words of the destination. Thus, when the destination text is altered, iBiblia tries to restore as many of these associations as it can. However, the algorithm designed for this purpose is far from perfect and performs poorly in some edge cases.

I suspect this issue isn't significant for projects that use an existing translation where little to no editing is required. However, for a translation project like yours, I can imagine this being a significant inconvenience.

This issue has been bothering me for some time now, and it's on my list to revisit and improve the algorithm that restores associations after edits. Therefore, let's keep this issue open until I have had a chance to address it.

I think I found a work-around to overcome this issue:

To replace a word or a phrase without randomly losing previous word associations between the Source and the Destination texts, one must follow these steps:

  1. Disassociate the word/s that will be replaced or edited in the Destination text from the word/s in the Source text. This can be done by doing a double right-click on the associated word/s in the Destination or in Source text.
  2. Enter into edit mode (double left-click) inside the Destination text and update the target word/s. Once done, press ESC or save icon.
  3. Re-associate the updated word/s with the word/s in the Source text.
  4. Save or press ESC.

I think this instruction will avoid this issue to ever happen again for the user and no need to work on the current algorithm.
