Set up a Rolling-Release Rails Application Server in XX minutes #8

During the January meeting, our guest proclaimed that setting up a Rails Application Server that supports zero-downtime deploys is super hard, and that other technologies (namely Elixir/Phoenix) provide a lot better experiences.

I disagree. Eventhough there are some hoops you have to jump through, it is possible to create a server setup without providing a few hundred Docker containers and I will show you how to do it.

Going from a blank Linux machine to a Rails application server that supports zero downtime deploys in less than an hour and deploying a Rails app to it. And all of that without using any DevOps tools.

I will also throw in a few best practices how to do destructive migrations without causing any downtime :)

Awesome idea. Since the beginning of the ruby meetup sessions I've been wanting to hear something of the different deployment & infrastructure paths for ruby (and rails) since it seems that everyone has a different solution 😁

Sorry, I won't make it for tomorrows meetup. I will do this talk at a later meetup this year. Sorry

hi @klaustopher , I know it's looooong ago, but is it still a valid proposal? 😅

klaustopher commented 1 year ago

Puh, I might be able to prepare something for some time :D

Alright, then I keep you on the list 😆 Maybe after the summer break, or would you, theoretically, already want to do the on the next Meetup on June 6th?
