updating for event-schemas

I'm a little confused as to what's going on here. It looks like this branch is a fork or a fork?

We updated the main repo (this one) to work with protoc v3 back in February (#382), but it doesn't look like that got pulled back into the forked repo.

As for the event schemas, I'm not sure how bumping the gem version helps with that, but I'm happy to help get this sorted out if I can.
