(Re)-Naming the app #150

Before we go live wonder about a rename e.g.

Feel that "Wrangler" is better than "Explorer" at describing this.

Our current tagline is: View, Clean and Share Data in the Browser (could perhaps change to View, Wrangle and Share Data in the Browser or even just "Wrangle Data in your Browser"

@maxogden @nmashton @djw interested in your thoughts here

nmashton commented 10 years ago

"Wrangler" is more accurate, but something about it rubs me the wrong way... maybe it's that I already frequently encounter the term "data wrangler" as a term referring to individuals.

Maybe something more overly metaphorical would work? Thinking of semantic fields that involve "processing" and "presentation", food preparation comes to mind... "Data Chef"? :)

@davidmiller @djw @shevski love your thoughts here ...

davidmiller commented 10 years ago

I like things that let me explore data in a web browser.

Wrangling is something I have no interest in doing in JavaScript/a web browser/this application ;)

Data Explorer makes the conceptual move that the focus should be on exploration. Naturally, this fits with my general feelings above.

Data Deck is a pleasing sequence of two words, without making much of a conceptual statement about what the app does. It would get my vote.

Is this a democratic process?

rufuspollock commented 10 years ago

@davidmiller this is great feedback - thank-you :-)

Re the process: not sure it is fully democratic (software development more seems to take the route of "dictatorship tempered by oligarchy") but would be happy with any process that gets a good decision.

Data Deck +1

Makes me think of a music mixing deck :)

rufuspollock commented 10 years ago

So far we have:

So at the moment either we rename to DataDeck or stick with Data Explorer (which means least change!)

rossjones commented 10 years ago

+1 for data deck, just to make it easier :)

rufuspollock commented 10 years ago

@aliounemedia - do you have any thoughts here?

rufuspollock commented 10 years ago

I've had some -1s on data deck. Data Explorer seems over-used.

I think the essence here is "editing and manipulating" data (any viz etc is secondary).

New ideas:

Hi all , would want to vote for + 0 for this, I would not want to influence the future name of DataExplorer for the other countries. According to my experience in senegal, when I speak about it to some teachers and developeurs of University of dakar and dakarlug.org , the name is not very sufficient for people to understand what it mean , I am always need to make a demo for people to understand that 'Dataexplorer is for editing and saving data' .

Maybe because people speak french.

rufuspollock commented 10 years ago

I think the app just for editing git table data should probably be separate and simpler. As such I think we just name this as appropriate. I'm proposing to go with DataDeck and describe it is a data workbench or similar.
