Open content (image) search engine #66

Open rufuspollock opened 10 years ago

rufuspollock commented 10 years ago

Search for content compliant with the Open Definition

Aim is simplicity.

May be worth just focusing on images / photos to start with

Let me try to list some components that we may need to develop separately.

  1. A Web Spider that is able to tell if a content is licensed as Open Data, collect attributes from images (other multimedia content later on), to be used in search later on.
  2. Index, in the sense of information retrieval, a sort of storage that maps images (other multimedia content later on) to their keywords or other metadata
  3. Web service/interface for the search engine.

@gr33ndata you might start just focusing on say wikimedia and flickr (to start with) ...

Hi, I'm involved with OKFN's open dev working group... I'm working with a foundation trialling open content. We're experimenting with releasing certain images under open licenses and some not, to inform a case for making more content open.

Three images are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/100346034@N07/10266190425/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/100346034@N07/10266004054/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/100346034@N07/10266261805/

if this open image search idea can happen within the next three months, I can be involved, including from the perspective of someone associated with content that might be made open if benefits are demonstrable.

I have the domain opencartoons.org that could be used for furthering this idea, if it's practical and manageable to limit to illustrations/cartoons to begin. There are less consent issues with cartoons/illustrations that photos of people, so from an open development and ethics perspective I'm keen to focus energies there first.

As well as Wikimedia Commons & http://search.creativecommons.org there are many images at public domain places eg. publicdomainreview.org that would be good to search/index.

From my development intention perspective, it would be good to focus on searchable content to illustrate concepts in human rights or environmental law, as the incentive for this project in my foundation was difficulty sourcing images for these topics.

Let me know if it's useful to share the domain to start playing around with. I've already communicated with Katelyn and Laura about it being an OKFN project.
