If server load is an issue and Google is worried about abuse, why not put a
session time limit on the requests to stop 24/7 use? This would make an amazing
addition to an app that I'm working one and a typical user would use this for
no more than a minute or 2 at a time.

I can think of a few use cases:
1. a browser extension (similar to say the google reader notifier)that displays
the average number of users over a 1-5 minute time period.
2. a company like ifttt could build a trigger so you could be sms'd whenever
you're getting an influx of traffic.
3. it will be possible to gather data on what time of day traffic is highest.

Is Google planning on building RealTime data into the API or not? Would it be
best to go with a third-party option at this point? Any suggestions for a
third-party that will do this?
Thanks,

Hey all. I spent tons of time looking for a solution to this as well. Recently
I found a 3rd party that can give you your GA Realtime data via API pulls or
pushes. They also make custom alerts based on the real time data. If anyone is
interested, shoot me an email ( tlundyusa at gmail ).
Best,
Tom

We wish to recover at regular intervals (5 minutes) the number of active
visitors on our website to compare these values to events (communication
campaigns) and to the load on our infrastructure servers. I am looking for a
script that allow me to retrieve data and insert it in a MySQL database ...

This is one of the most amazing things I could ever think of! It would help us
tremendously and I can think of more uses than just an amazing visitors online
widget... Imagine the affiliate programs that could be created based on this
data! My wish for today is that I wake up tomorrow and this kind of API access
is now available!

Indeed, it is really interesting for two type of "clients":
1) E-Commerce: helps following the trends and see the effect of actions take
2) Information: helps monitoring the flow and detect anomalously increasing
trends, the origin of the visitor, and somehow the reasons why they landed on
our website (keywords, referrers)
So, definitively a +1 for this!

I intend to use a real-time API as follows...
My church livestreams our services, including a separate stream for deaf
translation. I would like to embed the realtime number of visitors and the
list locations side-by-side with each webcast feed on the page I use for
monitoring.
