For example, why are there multiple measures of conductivity, turbidity and dissolved organic matter?
Not sure how best to present this. The easiest option is probably a block of text and/or images below each plot or interface which explains what is being displayed. It could be static, or it could be driven by the parameters selected for plotting. The disadvantage is that this wouldn't appear until after a parameter has been plotted, so it won't be helpful for the initial selection.
