It seems like no merges have been made for 2 months and I can't see any PR review since either. Is this project abandoned/unmaintained? If not, what is the situation like?

Yes, it is actively maintained. No merges in 2 months doesn't mean something is unmaintained.

I realized I hadn't heard anything back from #504 and then saw that nothing was getting done.
