Fix update_reference #1707

The update_reference GitHub method was failing because it was trying to force the JSON response to be the unit type instead of the proper GitReference.

@Mark-Simulacrum Do you think you'd be able to take a look at this? This is needed to try to get the book updates working again (though I am not certain it will fix it).
