I merged your updates and included all my tests and quickcheck properties, back into them, This should also cover my prior pull reqs

Zach, could we please go slowly on this until I have completely tested the new interface and merged into the develop branch? And then try to make each PR simple and do one thing so I can keep track of them? :-)

Ok, going to close this PR, there are a bunch of smaller ones that I am leaving open though
