12.05.2024 Discussion

Since the topic-tree does contain a lot of tags that can hardly be understood as being related to topics it is necessary to rework this subtree.

Option 1

Remove topics, possibilities and solution space from problem types. Reframe moral and emotional challenges as a problem type.

Option 2

Rework all topics such that they can be leaf-tags from the already defined problem types like game of skill and dexterity, logic challenges and other.

Solution

For the time being we opted for option 1. To accomplish this we defined and refined a sentence that can be used as guidance on how to use the tags.

Version 1

The game has the themes [themes] and poses a [problem type] problem that the player needs to solve. For this the player can use these [problem solving techniques].

Version 2

Besides the problem type another tag category (Themes/Topic/Genre/Settings) was introduced, allowing to group a lot of tags that for now are not clearly defined but might be useful in the future. This includes for example tags like, sport, fantasy, detective work and others.

The currently chosen problem types are

Deciding which tags are important was especially difficult for the tags related to non human lifeform i.e. _monsters_, _creatures_, _aliens_. Here the differentiation between monsters and creatures was difficult. One initial idea was to use sentience and consciousness for identification, since aliens might fly with a spaceship, while creatures like animals might not. Unfortunately this does not hold up against fantasy creatures that might have build a civilization or can talk - for example a dragon could be a simple creature, but could also be a creature with a history or similar (TES V: Skyrim). Additionally we found, that the original idea is to indicate whether a game has dragons or not rather than showing how advanced they are. On the other hand it is difficult to identify games that have creatures or similar as tag anyway - even though Minecraft has monsters and creatures (animals) neither should be a topic of this game. Finally we wondered whether it might be important to add animals as a tag for example for games like Pferd & Pony: Mein Pferdehof where the horse would be an essential part of the game and creatures might not sufficiently represent that.
Until further discussion we decided to keep creatures and _monsters_, but this should be something to revisit in the future.
