Using a mechanical user to duplicate botanica petals (bonemeal -> shears, feed back in to be planted) and found that the user punches me if i am in the blocks to the left of its face (redstone blocks in the first picture are the ones getting hit, the one directly in front of the user makes sense, its the ones to the side that confused me) while the same spots to the right of where it faces dont do the same (as can be seen by the pic)
