Admittedly, this isn't the best experience. Improvements being that the checkbox should either be enabled by default or you should get an alert up on trying to record the shortcut that communicates this and allows you to enable this setting from the alert. (This has been on my todo list for a while, and I'll bump it in priority).
The reason this happens is likely because option + a letter is interpreted by the OS as another letter, not as a shortcut.

macOS version: Sonoma 14.1 Rectangle version: newest as of writing Logs if applicable (In Rectangle menu, hold option, "View Logging..."):
With spectacle, I used alt+h for left half of the screen, as well as alt other keys for the other shortcuts. Obviously, this is the first thing I tried when opening Rectangle, and it apparently doesn't work. I just get the error beep noise. So, right off the bat this is not a good replacement for spectacle.
