ryankemper / writings

This repo will contain various writings (articles, free-form, etc) as I iterate on them. When stuff is ready it will be published somewhere "official" (medium, personal blog, etc - haven't decided specifics yet)

Third-person innapropriate #4

We characterize the root of United States policy...

The original author is a layperson...

Care has been taken

You're not a peer-reviewed journal, your website is literally your name, use first-person

These examples should read:

I characterize

I am a layperson

I have taken care

While 3rd person language sounds more fancy or scientific, it's falling out of favour with modern writers, as I understand it. There are two big problems with it:

  1. It almost always makes your sentences more convoluted
  2. It can seem impersonal (This probably contributes to #3)

I hope you can see those examples I've chosen seem immediately more clear and genuine?
