Improve: Fedora and RHEL/CentOS/Scientific Linux RPM #293

Closed RWL-69 closed 9 months ago

RWL-69 commented 11 months ago

URL: /wiki/installation/install-fedora-centos-rhel.html

Improvement: The NuxRef Repository is out dated. Only goes up to RHEL 8 and Fedora 33. Should be removed from the page. If you follow the link for https://li.nux.ro/repos.html It says that the project is retired.

Basically, any RPM install methods are out of date.

Safihre commented 11 months ago

Are you aware of any alternatives?

sanderjo commented 11 months ago

Basically, any RPM install methods are out of date.

In general? Or for SABnzbd?

If so, the install methods on Redhat etc:

Right?

Furthermore: AFAIK Centos has been killed by Redhat? So remove from topic too?

RWL-69 commented 11 months ago

In general, the page needs to be removed or rewritten with the points you have brought up. I find RPM as good as any method to update programs and have been using it for a very long time.

As a Python app, I found it was easy to use the "from source" method last night. I tried the snap install but had issues and couldn't get it to work. On that note, the install from source wants to use the snap directory under /var as the default directory, Will have to look at the notes on configuration as part of the learning process for SABnzbd.

I prefer native installs that way updates are maintained better, if you get them. :)

I have been using appimages for some applications and have found those to be the easiest, at least in my case.

Checking: do you really advice to remove the page? If so: why? Because there is no SABnzbd RPM anymore for modern RH / Fedora versions?

The source and snap and flatpak are Linux generic methods.

RWL-69 commented 11 months ago

You are partially correct. For Linux, you can just have a pointer to snap or flatpak or the source. There is no specific Fedora/RedHat etc type of install anymore, since generic is the only option, as there is no direct RPM version. The Wiki page could remain for Fedora/RH based specific issues. No need for a Fedora/RHEL install page. Unless the Wiki explains how to install and setup snap or flatpak. I couldn't find an appimage version of SABnzbd.

A link for all the RPM derivatives can point to the generic Linux page. A link from the Fedora/RHEL page could point to the generic install.

Looking at the page. The nuxref repository is dead to current releases, so it shouldn't be referenced. EL8 and FC33 are the most recent versions on the site. The last update for sabnzdb for EL8 was 2020-12-09: sabnzbd-3.1.1-1.el8.nuxref. Current version if 4.1.0. No yum/dnf updates will ever appear.

From Sources is outdated.

The systemd unit file section (7-9) may be useful for those that want to use SABnabd as a service.

So, most of the page is going to cause confusion or issues for many, since they will most likely be using a newer version of Fedora which is presently at FC39. or want the latest version of SABnzbd which is not installed by the method described on the Wiki page.

I hope I explained it well enough.

IMHO we should keep a placeholder page around, given that rpm is a major package format in the linux world. And basically use that to point out that there's no up-to-date repo that we know of and refer users to the install methods than can be used instead (source, snap, flatpak).

RWL-69 commented 11 months ago

Placeholder is the term I couldn't think of. Good idea. And as I said, if the firewall configuration is still accurate, keep that as well.

At least people won't spend time going down a path that won't work, as I did.

sanderjo commented 11 months ago

Robin, are you willing to rewrite the page?

RWL-69 commented 11 months ago

Never done it before. I do have the time. Will look at it and think about it for a few days.

Hello, After thinking about it, yes, I will edit the Wiki page. Not sure when due to present schedule but I may try to make a note on it ASAP.

Safihre commented 10 months ago

Great!

Safihre commented 9 months ago

I removed the page for now.

RWL-69 commented 9 months ago

Okay.

I didn't know how to edit it. Or if I was to write something up and send it.

Closing it works.
